The Burren landscape is a place shrouded in mystery, but in every rock and in every stony field there is a story waiting to be told – the stones can speak, if there is an ear to listen. At first sight, it’s a vast wild empty landscape of bare rock, but local experts bring us through the Burren, to reveal its secrets. It is one of the most diverse landscapes on earth, teeming with rarities from nature, a crisscross of stone walls and an abundance of ancient monuments.
SONG OF OUR ANCESTORS
Explores the natural processes that have made the Burren one of the most biologically diverse ecosystems on the planet and follows this spellbinding landscape through the course of one magical year. Intimate natural history photography, ancient pockets of Celtic rainforests, thick with moss and lichens that are thousands and thousands of years old, luckily inaccessible to humans. And unlike farming practices elsewhere in the world, these meadows exist purely because of unique ancient farming practice, that goes back a few millennia.
SYMPHONY OF LIFE
Examines the clues contained within the heart of the Burren; the stones, tombs and underground caverns, to reveal fresh secrets of the human story; The program takes audiences on a journey through the ages, tracing the genetic story of the Irish people. It tells the story of the Irish hunter-gatherers and reveals what became of them. It asks if prehistoric farmers irreversibly altered this landscape and if modern Irish society is descended from those who first lived here over 10,000 years ago?
MARCH OF THE ORCHIDS
The Burren is a magical landscape with a very unique flora and fauna. In the Summer and Autumn, the wildflower meadows are home to the greatest variety of orchids found anywhere else in Europe. These abundant flowers give life to thousands of species of moths, butterflies and birds. A wonderful way to witness the turning of the seasons is to follow the March of the Orchids.
Around 24 of Ireland’s 28 native orchids thrive in the Burren.
